Fungal infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with hematologic malignancies and recipients of bone-marrow / hematopoietic stem-cell transplants. Candida species remains one of the most common fungal pathogens. Multiple risk factors have been identified and among them prior antibiotic exposure. The primary site of infection can involve the bloodstream, meninges or urinary tract, but disease is frequently disseminated to multiple organ systems. Amphotericin is the most commonly used antifungal agent. The mortality rate is high and e.g. among neonates with systematic candidisis remains approximately 30%.
